South Africa is one of my favourite places to visit in the world, as the beautiful country offers so much to see and experience. But it’s not easy to do it all on a trip here, so I recommend heading to KwaZulu Natal, where you can enjoy a little bit of everything South Africa has to offer – from adventurous safaris to stunning beaches.

About KwaZulu Natal

You may not have heard of KwaZulu Natal before, but this is an area situated on the eastern coast of South Africa. This kingdom covers a vast area and visitors who come here can enjoy a variety of experiences, from exploring its tawny-coloured savannahs to learning about Indian descendants who have called the area home for many years.

It is also where you’ll find the popular city of Durban, giving holidaymakers the chance to find out what urban life is like in South Africa. Here, they can enjoy eating at high-end restaurants and visit cultural attractions.

You can also head to the golden beaches, taking a splash in the Indian Ocean if you so wish. If you head to the northern part of the region, you may spot dolphins and mammals in the water. However, if it’s animals you want to see, you should visit the Elephant Coast, where there are nature reserves home to Africa’s Big Five – buffalo, lion, rhino, leopard and, of course, elephant.

What is there to do here?

As I said, KwaZulu Natal offers the opportunity to do a lot of different types of activities. However, it is best for adventure enthusiasts as its unique landscape is a haven for people who want to take part in thrill-seeking pursuits. Getting active and working up a sweat is perhaps the top way to explore the region, as you can make the most of being outdoors and soaking up the sights of the African plains, mountains and beaches.

Most people who come to South Africa want to spend at least some of their time getting close to indigenous animals on safari, so I’d definitely recommend doing this on a trip to KwaZulu Natal. You could visit the Hluhluwe Game Reserve, for instance, where you can travel through the savannah for a chance to see the Big Five in the flesh.

If you want to see contemporary KwaZulu Natal, I’d recommend going to Durban. Here you can not only see a modern-day South Africa, but you can lie on its white beaches and enjoy the seaside view of the deep blue ocean.

Other places I’d head to in this region of South Africa include the Battlefields at Isandlwana and Roke’s Drift. A trip here won’t necessarily involve you being active, but you will walk through the famous historic site where the Zulus have fought many battles over the years, including against the British. You can have a tour of the site where these bloody attacks took place and many historical moments were recorded, learning about these events in more detail.

These are just a few reasons why I would book a trip to KwaZulu Natal with a holiday provider like Wanderforth, but this is by no means a comprehensive list of things to see and do in the region, so you can be sure there’s plenty for you to experience on your holiday.
