Uncommon activities that you should try while on holiday

As another summer season comes around it’s easy to fall back into the same old holiday routine of crowded beach, sunburn and overpriced ice cream. But with so many great activities available out there, there’s no excuse not to try something new this year.

Whether you’re on a family holiday, away with friends, or on a romantic break for two, activities are a great way to bring people together. From the thrill of water sports to the calming simplicity of a city walk, there’s something for everybody to enjoy.

Check out our list of some of the more uncommon holiday activities that you should try this summer.

Sand Yachting

Sand yachting or land sailing, is the racing of wheeled yachts that are powered by the wind. It first became a sport in the 1950’s, on North West Europe’s vast sandy beaches, but is now a recognised sport the world over.

Popular due to its accessibility for beginners and most ages, sand yachting is a fast-paced adrenaline rush. With speeds of up to 90 Kph possible, sand yachts are able to go 3 to 4 times the wind speed.

While sand yachting would suggest that this sport is only possible on sand, there are options to race on grass too. Short grassy areas provide potentially slower speeds for beginners and offer a wider variety of venues.

Two-seater yachts are also available to hire at some venues, allowing an adult or instructor to teach you the ropes. So, if you’ve always fancied trying your had at sailing but you don’t want to get your feet wet, sand yachting could be for you.

Sailing

If sand yachting isn’t for you, then why not take to the water and try the real thing? A yacht charter in Europe is a great way to experience a different country in a unique and fun way.

With a wide variety of craft to choose from, there is a boat here to suit every level of ability. Be it a catamaran, sailing yacht or a motorboat, chartering is a fun activity for a long holiday or an exciting day out.

Many smaller boats require no licence while others need qualifications such as RYA Day Skipper or International Certificate of Competence. Alternatively, simply hire a yacht with a skipper attached and lie back and enjoy the sunshine from the deck of your very own boat.

Whether you want a relaxing holiday or an exhilarating adventure, there’s a boat out there for you. And with yacht charters available in a variety of countries, including Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Italy and France, there’s no excuse not to give it a try.

Coasteering

Coasteering originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales, in the early 1980’s, thanks to surfers clambering up rocks to find the best spot to surf. Now it’s become one of the fastest-growing water-based activities in the UK and beyond.

It is a combination of cliff jumping, swimming, abseiling, climbing and coastal exploration, allowing people to discover places that are normally too difficult to access. The changing tides, waves and wildlife mean every coasteering trip is unique.

From scrambling over rocks, swimming into canyons, exploring caves, bodysurfing breakers and leaping off cliffs, coasteering is a great day out. No experience is necessary, all you need is a wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and a qualified instructor and you’re all set.

Coasteering is a great way to step out of your comfort zone and create some lasting memories. It’s an inexpensive thrill ride that can be enjoyed by families and adrenaline junkies alike.

Bike Riding

Bike rides are a great way to explore a new place and keep you fit at the same time. With cycling’s popularity continuing to grow, there’s now a wealth of trails and rides to suit every ability.

From a family day out or a longer holiday, cycling is a fun way to bond over a shared experience. So, head for the mountains to push your limits, or try something a little flatter with a picnic?

There’s lots of places that offer bike hire, advice on local trails, and all the equipment you’ll need. So, whether you are on a staycation this summer or travelling abroad, why not explore on two wheels.

Hot Air Ballooning

The sky’s the limit when it comes to a hot air balloon ride. A thrilling yet serene adventure for families, groups of friends or romantic couples.

Experience breath-taking scenery and a bird’s eye view of the landscape as you float high above the treetops. Discover sights you’ve never seen before and see nature from a whole new perspective.

Balloon rides are available all over the world, and generally suitable for ages 7 and above. Travelling at heights between 500 to 2500 feet, they are a great way to create unforgettable memories.

During the summer, balloons fly in the early morning or late evening to avoid the heat of the day. Flights last around one hour and balloons will travel around 5-10 miles per flight.

Holiday memories

Wherever you decide to holiday this year, there’s no shortage of new and exciting things to do. Whether you want adventure or relaxation, trying new activities is a great way to create holiday memories that will last a lifetime.
